El Diario a Bordo de la Corbeta Unión es un documento de excepcional importancia para conocer uno de los acontecimientos más significativos de nuestra historia naval: La Guerra del Pacífico. En él se registran testimonios inéditos de hechos y sucesos a bordo de la nave, historias conmovedoras y sacrificios heroicos de sus valerosos marinos, crónicas en el mar del Pacífico de los diversos combates, capturas y travesías en las que participó la Unión junto al monitor Huáscar. Después de 120 años de permanecer perdido el documento original del Diario a Bordo de la Corbeta Unión fue hallado por un grupo de patriotas liderado por el Dr. Hernán Garrido-Lecca y la Casa del Libro Viejo y entregado en donación a la Marina de Guerra del Perú. Gracias a éste documento se podrá reconstruir por completo la participación de la Unión en la Guerra del Pacífico. Las 119 hojas del diario de la corbeta Unión registran hechos inéditos nunca antes conocidos. Desde que empezó a servir a la patria, el 11 de mayo de 1879 hasta el 19 de octubre de 1880 en que termina el diario. Relatos día a día escritos a puño y letra por dos de sus comandantes Nicolás del Portal y Manuel Villavicencio, quienes pese a encontrarse solos en alta mar y superados en número de buques por el enemigo, demostraron valor y heroísmo al no claudicar en los diversos enfrentamientos con las fuerzas chilenas.
